A poll that was conducted between July 9th and July 13th by the Associated Press in regards to the United States Supreme Court's recent ruling on same-sex marriage legalization has come up with surprising results. With an estimated margin of error of 3.4%, it has shown that 42% of Americans support same-sex marriage and 40% do not. The numbers are extrapolated from a survey size of just over 1,000 adults. (An article the Associate Press posted about their survey can be seen here.)
Before the ruling took place in late June, many surveys put more than half of all Americans in support of same-sex marriages. The Supreme Court's 5-to-4 vote on the issue seemed to accurately reflect the overall opinion of the people. So how has such a dramatic decline taken place?
Analysts speculate that many people who had previously declared themselves in support of same-sex marriages were actually right on the line. When the controversy broke out after the ruling, they backed out and opted to report themselves as "undecided," perhaps waiting to see how things looked once all the debates died down. That would explain how support has dropped but opposition has not significantly risen.
Religious Liberties Are Seen As the Priority
The poll also asked participants what was more important: protecting religious liberties or protecting the rights of members of the LGBTQ community. An overwhelming 56% felt that religious freedoms should be defended, first and foremost. Just 39% said the liberties of those seeking same-sex marriages were more important. While the polls will unlikely have any direct effect on how lawmakers will respond to the Supreme Court's ruling, it does provide more evidence to politicians who argue that it was a direct violation of religious rights.
